The retaining wall

The house is all straight lines, so we drew the garden wall as a curve, on purpose. Recycled brick, corten edging the beds, wrapping the main living and the garden. It holds the slope back and hands you flat lawn in return. Laid by hand, one brick at a time. We enjoyed every slow week of it.

The home is deliberately straight and angular, so the garden wall got to be the opposite. It curves around the main living and the garden in recycled brick, with corten steel edging the beds. Designing it was a genuine joy: one soft line against a sharp house, and the contrast is the point. It works hard too. The block slopes, and the wall holds the grade back to give flat, usable land around the home. Curved walls are laid by hand, one brick at a time, and they take a while. We'd do it again tomorrow, and you see it from the kitchen window every day.
