The reserve

The land directly behind the house is a riparian reserve: a protected strip of bush, about 20 metres deep, that cannot be built on. Our lawn runs right up to it, the bush takes over, and the whole vista is borrowed. We love a view we did not have to plant.

The land behind Eden is a riparian reserve, a protected strip of bush about 20 metres deep that cannot be built on. Our lawn runs right up to it, the bush takes over, and the view keeps going long past the boundary. That's the borrowed vista, and the house is arranged around it: the snug looks out to the reserve, the living room faces it through 3.6 metres of glass either side of the fireplace, and the main bedroom opens to the deck with the bush right there. The rear of the plan is mostly glass for exactly this reason. A view that big, already grown, and we did not have to plant a single tree of it.

We love a view we did not have to plant.
